Weather in Playa del Carmen
In general terms, the weather in Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya is pretty dreamy, it is the tropics after all, no parkas necessary. Summer is hot and humid, June, July, and August have average temperatures in the 80s and 90s and even the nights are deliciously tropical.
Winter months of November, December, and January average temps in the high 70s, low 80s and the humidity is comfortable with cool nights. Winter is high season as people escape from their frigid homes for the perfect weather in Playa del Carmen.
October averages the most rainfall and April the least, the longest days are in May and it is a good idea to understand the hurricane season in Playa del Carmen which runs from June to the end of October.
Jorge Rodriguez Photography is delighted to celebrate Riviera Maya weddings all year round, even a “bad” weather day is beautiful with love and the gorgeous settings you’ll find in the Mexican Caribbean.
What is the best month to get married in Playa del Carmen?
May is the most popular month to get married in the Riviera Maya and for many good reasons. The “perfect weather month” in Playa del Carmen brings long days and warm nights, very little chance of rain, and a comfortable level of humidity.
The ocean and pools are good temps for swimming and the afternoons are perfect for a wedding on the beach. We recommend that May wedding ceremonies in Playa del Carmen have a start time between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm for fantastic light, phenomenal photos, and the comfort of you and your guests.
The popularity of getting married in May in the Riviera Maya means it is “high season” which means higher prices, less availability of wedding service providers in Playa del Carmen, and depending on your resort, it can begin to feel like a “wedding factory” with back to back ceremonies.
We recommend booking early to ensure the availability of the best wedding photographers in the Riviera Maya and to have the peace of mind that rooms are available for all your guests. The weather in late April and early June is very much the same if you have some wiggle room in your scheduling.
Be sure to look at some of the smaller wedding venues in Playa del Carmen, a charming boutique resort wedding in Tulum or a villa wedding in Puerto Aventuras can make your dreams come true without the crowds. Jorge Rodriguez Photography has extensive experience in a wide range of Riviera Maya wedding venues, we are happy to provide personalized advice.

Is December a good time for a Riviera Maya wedding?
The months of November, December, and January are high season for travel in general and weddings in Cancun and the Riviera Maya. In the Mexican Caribbean, “winter weather” means temperatures in the 80s, a low chance of rainfall, and cooler nights that may require a jacket or sweater. The days are shorter so we recommend starting your wedding ceremony earlier around 4:00 or 4:30 to capture the magic light.
The weather in December in Playa del Carmen is truly beautiful and ideal for an outdoor wedding and for guests seeking a relaxing beach vacation escape from the freezing winter back home.
Prices are at their highest, particularly during holiday times like Christmas and New Years'. Of course, it is worth every peso, a winter wedding in paradise is something you will treasure forever.

How hot is it in summer in Mexico?
The summer weather in Playa del Carmen is...let’s say “sultry”. It is definitely the hottest time of the year and the temperatures can soar up to the 90s with high humidity. Planning a summer wedding in Playa del Carmen you need to take the heat into consideration and avoid events at the hottest point of the day, between 12 and 3 pm. Summer is the rainy season but that doesn’t mean rain all the time, it’s generally a refreshing afternoon thunderstorm that will pass quickly.
The ocean temps are high, you and your guests will get the maximum beach and swimming time on the long summer days. Summer is a great time to explore alternative wedding venues in the Riviera Maya that may offer some respite from the heat. An air-conditioned chapel wedding is a very traditional approach, while those looking for a truly unique way to tie the knot in a refreshing way can dive into a cave or cenote wedding.
Summer weddings in Playa del Carmen are popular for the long hot days and the wide range of aquatic activities available for you and your guests. The hot weather encourages many of our brides to indulge in Riviera Maya trash the dress sessions with refreshing swims in the sea or cenotes.

Playa del Carmen Weddings in Hurricane Season?
Hurricane season in the Mexican Caribbean runs from June to November as the summer sun raises the ocean temps increasing the chances for a storm. Truly big and dangerous weather events are extremely uncommon, hurricane season does not mean raging tropical storms every day. It is difficult to predict when and where a hurricane may hit until it is nearing land so asking “Will there be a hurricane on my wedding day?” is a question for the Magic 8 ball, not a meteorologist. In general, we know a storm is imminent a few days before so there is always time to make changes to your plans.
Prices are generally lower during hurricane season and you can find some fabulous destination wedding deals in Playa del Carmen in September and October. Many travelers find this to be a good time to travel with fewer crowds, lower prices and in general some really great weather (with some exceptions of course). Travel insurance is a must, in the rare event of a hurricane you’ll want to be covered.
If it does rain on your wedding day, Jorge Rodriguez Photography. Rain brings its own special beauty and light and a rainy day wedding is definitely not a disaster.
